Technological Progress, Luck, and the Variability of Earnings
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper develops a theoretical model to analyse how the arrival of a new technology embodied in capital affects the variability of earnings when workers’ adaptability to new technologies is subject to random events (luck) that can be history dependent. It is argued that technological change can leverage the importance of these stochastic factors and increase earnings instability in three ways. First, a rise in the speed of embodied technological progress raises the market premium to the lucky workers adaptable to the leading-edge technology. Second, the generality of the technology raises the ability of adaptable workers to transfer recently aquired knowledge to new machines and reduces the cost of retooling old machines, which increases the demand for adaptable workers. Third, the reduction in organizational knowledge about mature machines reduces the wage of those unlucky workers that cannot operate leading-edge machines.

he links among trade, technological changes, and worker earnings have been the subject of intense research during the past few decades. The current literature on this subject shows that trade liberalization and technological changes are the main drivers of demand for skilled workers and a rise in the wage premium. متن کاملAgency Conflicts over the Short and Long Run: Short-Termism, Long-Termism, and Pay-for-Luck∗
We develop a dynamic agency model in which the agent controls current earnings via short-term effort and firm growth via long-term effort and the firm is subject to both shortand long-run shocks. Under the optimal contract, agency conflicts can induce both overand underinvestment in shortand long-term efforts compared to first best, leading to shortor long-termism in corporate policies. متن کاملVariability of F2-layer peak characteristics at low latitude in Argentina for high and low solar activity and comparison with the IRI-2016 model
This work presents the study of the variability of foF2 and hmF2 at a low latitude station in South America (Tucumán, 26.9°S, 294.6°E; magnetic latitude 15.5°S, Argentina). Ground based ionosonde measurements obtained during different seasonal and solar activity conditions (a year of low solar activity, 2009 and one of high solar activity, 2016) are considered in order to compare the ionospheri...
متن کاملCorrection: Merit and Justice: An Experimental Analysis of Attitude to Inequality
Merit and justice play a crucial role in ethical theory and political philosophy. Some theories view justice as allocation according to merit; others view justice as based on criteria of its own, and take merit and justice as two independent values. We study experimentally how these views are perceived. In our experiment subjects played two games (both against the computer): a game of skill and...
